The Miraculous Medal 2018

Lourdes’ significance is universally accepted. It remains one of the greatest shrines in France. Yet in the nineteenth century, both before and after the great miracles at the Massabielle grotto, the Gracious Virgin made her appearance four more times, and all four messages given by her are of great importance. In Lourdes, she declared that she is the Immaculate Conception.

In 1832, twenty-eight years before Bernadette's vision, Our Lady had appeared to a humble nun, who later was canonized --to Catherine Laboure, member of the Sisters of Charity, the congregation founded by St. Vincent de Paul. This miracle occurred in the Convent at the Rue de Bac in Paris. The Virgin gave orders to Catherine Laboure that a medal should be coined and distributed throughout the world.

In 1846, in the Alps of Southern France, two children, fifteen-year-old Melanie Calvat and eleven-year-old Maximin Giraud, received the grace of being chosen for another apparition at La Salette.

In 1871 a twelve-year-old boy, Eugene Barbedette, and some of his little friends saw the Queen of Heaven in the vicinity of the village of Pontmain in Brittany.

Finally, in 1876, Estelle Faguette, a thirty-three-year-old woman, humble and incurably sick, who had once desired to enter the order of the Sisters of Charity, had several visions: her health was miraculously restored. This took place in the village of Pellevoisin, close to the city of Tours.

All these apparitions, though different in circumstances, had one characteristic in common: all contained warnings of suffering and prepared France and the world for them. The nineteenth century apparitions of the Blessed Virgin in France are in certain respects unparalleled. In the course of forty-six years, Mary revealed herself in five instances, appearing several times in some cases. It would seem that she had chosen France in the nineteenth century for some special reason, although it would be futile, if not impertinent, for us to try to fathom why.

The Convent of the Sisters of Charity, founded by St. Vincent de Paul at the Rue de Bac in Paris, is a secluded place of silence. The narrow, noisy street outside does not trouble the quiet coming and going of the sisters within the corridors, nor their prayers in the little church. A hundred and twenty years ago, the convent had the same atmosphere as now. Outside in the world, the people were as troubled as at present. Catherine Laboure, one of the novices, who had been transferred there in April 1830, was an ordinary, healthy, even robust peasant woman who felt very early the vocation to dedicate herself entirely to the religious life.

She had met with considerable resistance from her family in carrying out her dearest wish. Before entering the convent, she had undertaken more than her share in the heaviest domestic work, sometimes caring for the entire family, and later working as a waitress in the Paris inn of her uncle. But finally she became a nun. A few weeks after she had begun her novitiate, on the night of July 18, 1830, she was led by her guardian angel into the chapel where Our Lady appeared to her in great splendor and dignity. On this occasion and during the subsequent conversations, the Queen of Heaven confided secrets to Catherine Laboure and gave her specific orders.

Catherine never revealed these secrets directly to the outside world and her confessor at first did not pay attention to the recitals of the young nun. Afterwards, when the apparitions became public through the disclosures of the Bishop, Catherine's name was never mentioned in connection with them. Even her fellow sisters had not known the identity of the person chosen by the Virgin. It was not until after her death that the world discovered the name of this totally unknown nun.

The messages of Our Lady to Catherine pointed to coming upheavals in France and the world. She warned of great troubles, acute dangers, of a time when everyone would believe all to be lost. "The Cross will be trampled on, blood will run in the streets, the world will be plunged into sadness. But grace will be showered upon all who ask for it with faith and fervor."

And as a means to help spread the fervor, Our Lady told Catherine Laboure that a medal should be coined based on Catherine's impression of one of the visions. The young nun remembered that at the second apparition of Our Lady, she stood on a globe, holding in her hands another globe, which reflected rays of light of great brilliance.

The Blessed Virgin had explained to Catherine that the globe represented the entire world, France in particular and especially every single person, on whom she would bestow grace. Then the apparition altered, and Catherine saw a letter M surmounted by a Cross, standing on a bar beneath which were two hearts, the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Our Lady's desire that the medal be coined after this model was not fulfilled immediately, but when Catherine's confessor finally saw the importance of the visions, action was taken. The medal was coined and the first one taken to the Archbishop of Paris. Believing in the miraculous powers of the medal, he went with it to a man who was his close friend, although an apostate priest, the Archbishop of Malines in Belgium. Archbishop Pradt of Malines had deserted the Church during the French Revolution and firmly refused to submit himself to the authority of Rome.

When the Archbishop of Paris visited him at his deathbed, Pradt immediately humbled himself and became reconciled with the Church.

After this first miraculous event, wonderful favors were showered upon those who carried it: the medal became known and millions wore it throughout the world. One of the most remarkable events connected with the medal was the conversion of Theodore Ratisbonne, the descendant of a wealthy Alsatian Jewish family, a man of great culture but completely agnostic. He ascribed his sudden conversion to the Miraculous Medal. Ratisbonne and his brother became priests and founded the community of Notre Dame de Sion for the conversion of the Jews.

Though the circumstances of the apparitions at the Rue de Bac are different from Lourdes, there is one phenomenon common to both. The persons who had received such extraordinary graces and shown such heroic rewards were granted an incomparable reward after death. Soon after Catherine Laboure died in 1877, she was given the title "venerable."

In 1933, she was beatified and in 1947, canonized. When her body was exhumed in 1933, nearly fifty years after her death, it was found to be in perfect state. The hands that once were allowed to touch Our Lady--these hands, as well as the whole body--had not been allowed to decay.

The Power Of The Green Scapular

Our Lady of Fatima has promised her help to those who, following the divine will clearly expressed in these apparitions, have confident recourse in the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Having not a moment's doubt about her promised help on the one hand, and on the other seeing how little is done about the wishes of God and Our Lady, it is my desire to do everything I can so that at least that which has affected me as a Catholic and a Religious sister might encourage souls to turn with confidence to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and thus, through my 'little grain of sand, add to the propagation of this marvellous devotion.

With this in mind, when I heard of the great need in which two souls found themselves, I had recourse to the intercession of the Immaculate Heart. It concerned a young man, just married. About a month into his marriage he fell ill with pneumonia from which he recovered, more or less, though only for a short time. Two or three months later he caught a viral infection in the brain which did not leave him much hope of survival, and his state became increasingly fragile. It is not difficult to imagine the consternation and the pain of his young wife, who had not known that the real cause of his condition was AIDS, and that it was possible that she was infected with it.

Since the man's condition was already very bad, a priest was brought to him who, as is usual, offered him the Sacraments of Confession and Extreme Unction. Knowing his culpability, he refused them although he was still capable of confessing his sins.

Shortly afterwards he lost the use of speech. His exterior comportment manifested clearly the state of his soul, filling his family and all who saw him with deep pain. Expressions of panic, terror and despair passed across his face, a true interior martyrdom at seeing himself face to face with death and with a conscience soiled by the double sin of what he had done to infect himself with this frightful illness, and the crime of not having warned his spouse, living with her the normal life of a married man whilst putting her life at risk as well.

It was then, when I had learned of all this, that I had recourse to the intercession of our gentle Mother and her Immaculate Heart, making greater use of prayer and using the GREEN SCAPULAR, known also as the SCAPULAR OF THE IMMACULATE HEART. I have complete confidence in this miraculous scapular because, besides having been given to us by the Blessed Virgin herself, it works miracles through the intercession of the Immaculate Heart which, as we know, is the devotion DESIRED BY GOD for our times.

Even though I did not doubt its efficacy I nonetheless asked for it to be applied as quickly as possible to the sick man.

Since there was a delay in doing this I wrote to the young wife insisting strongly that it be placed by him as soon as possible, adding, 'don't be surprised if you see miracles since I had already asked for them from from Our Lady, saying to her, 'I know that you always hear me, my gentle Mother, and I do not doubt your intercession, but permit that this time I ask you for a miracle that may be shown to others. I know that the GREEN SCAPULAR does not fail if it is used with confidence in the humble instruments of salvation given to us by your maternal Heart. For this, for the glory of God and your Immaculate Heart, and for the salvation of many souls, grant me this miracle of conversion, so that I may be of use to him and that poor souls may be encouraged to be confident. If you so wish, pay a visit to this poor son of yours, but in such a way that the others realise what is happening and that you are there.

Shortly afterwards, I had some news.

The sick man became very ill, having vomited and been in great agitation. The priest was again called in, who this time placed the GREEN SCAPULAR on him and gave him Extreme Unction. With this, the man fell peacefully asleep. During the night he woke up. He seemed very happy, his eyes were luminous and fixed on a precise point in the room, he seemed to be speaking with someone since he answered questions (something he had not been able to do for some time), sometimes he smiled or wept with great emotion. His mother and sisters (people very far from God) who were present realised that something supernatural was taking place, even though they could see nothing, and they too wept with emotion.

After all this the state of the sick man, particularly the state of his soul, changed completely. There was no longer the former terror or panic visible in his face, but rather a great peace and happiness. His health, even though not entirely restored, was much better. The attitude of his mother and sisters was completely different; now they prayed willingly, made sure his scapulars were well arranged, etc. When his wife learned of what had happened, she was entirely convinced that Our Lady had come to visit him. Later on she asked the sick man: Did Our Lady come to see you?

Yes, he replied with an expression of happiness.

Are you going to get better?

No, he added, but also with an expression of tranquillity. He wanted to say what Our Lady had said to him, but he could no longer speak. Just from time to time he could be heard saying things like, 'be strong, 'the grace of God, etc.

My letter finally reached the woman the day following all these events (I had told no-one of my prayer to Our Lady), and she was able to tell me afterwards: 'You told me I must not be surprised if I see miracles with the Green Scapular. I believe the miracle has already taken place, not so much in his body as in his soul. Let us pray that, after a good preparation, his soul goes and unites itself with God and contemplates for all eternity she who granted him the great grace of conversion and peace of soul. Immaculate Virgin, may this account be for the greater glory of God and your glory; and by confidence in the marvellous intercession through the GREEN SCAPULAR, may many souls be saved.

'Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

The Martyrdom Of The Catholic Church in Communist Russia

A book by historian Jan Mikrut reveals how Latin and Byzantine Catholics remained faithful during the turmoil of Soviet-era atheism, to this day. The volume comes out during the 100th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution

Rome (AsiaNews) - Between November 7 and 8, 1917, the Bolsheviks led by Lenin established a revolutionary government ("October Revolution", according to the Julian calendar), ending the Tsarist empire and establishing the Soviet republic, which then became the USSR. 100 years since that date, on November 8 a book by Prof. Jan Mikrut, titled "The Catholic Church in the Soviet Union from the Revolution of 1917 to Perestrojka" (Verona, Gabrielli Editori, 2017) will be presented at the Gregorian University.  With the contributions of several scholars, it tells how Catholics resisted the "yoke" of a regime that wanted to reset all religions, exposing the heroic testimonies of martyrs and faithful in the Latin and Greek- Catholic communities. The preface to the book is by Msgr. Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, bishop of Minsk and Mahilëu (Belarus). By kind concession of the author, below we publish some excerpts.

The volume "The Catholic Church in the Soviet Union from the Revolution of 1917 to Perestrojka", by Prof. Jan Mikrut of the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome, presents the Via Crucis that the Catholic Church, of the both rites, traversed in that era, chronologically and thematically. The Via Crucis is populated by numerous figures who have already been raised to the glory of the altars, but also by others whose beatification process is still ongoing and thousands of unknown heroes of the faith whose story we will never know.

I recall the memories of the late Card. Kazimierz Świątek, Bishop of Pinsk in Belarus, who, in recounting his arrest, described particular fact: ... I was detained in Brest prison. There was a fly with me. Her buzz brought me some comfort and joy. After a while, however, the fly settled on the parapet and stopped giving any signs of life. I was alone. Then I was deported to Siberia.

A curious story came to me from Ukraine. After Yuriy Gagarin carried out the first space flight, non-believers wanted to exploit the event to promote atheism. And so one of them went to an orthodox church, and told the pastor he was to inform the faithful that Yuriy Gagarin had been to space and had not seen God and therefore God did not exist. He threatened that if the failed to give such an announcement they would close the church. The humble priest therefore, at the end of the Sunday liturgy, told his faithful: Dear brothers and sisters, Yuriy Alekseevich Gagarin flew into space but did not see God. But the Lord saw him, blessed and therefore Gagarin returned happily to earth.

Working as a vicar in the chapel of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn in Vilnius, I often welcomed the testimonies of the faith of the simple people who, despite the persecution, kept their faith intact. Once an old lady confided to me in the sacristy that she knelt on her knees and prayed in the church of St. Casimir, which had recently transformed into a Museum of Atheism. A museum clerk approached her, saying that she was not allowed to pray in that place as it was a museum of atheism. The old lady, however, answered resolutely that even if that was a museum for some, for her it would always be a church and therefore a house of prayer.

I will forget never the blessing ceremony of the first stone of the new church in the town of Marx on Volga, which took place in the early 1990s. Before the liturgy I was approached by the older people, begging me to put a simple brick in place of the angular stone. When I asked why they had this desire, as most usually wish the cornerstone to originate from some holy place, they proceeded to tell a truly moving story. During the religious persecution in the USSR, the old Marx church was destroyed. The inhabitants of that city, however, brought bricks from the ruins to their homes. They put them in the visible places and for long decades they prayed in front of those simple bricks. So, thanks to those bricks, the faith could be preserved and passed on to young people. We want the new church under construction to have a bond with the old, destroyed one, they told me.

Today, the Catholic Church in Russia has its own structures and is developing dynamically. Despite many difficulties it is very active in pastoral, cultural and editorial fields. Hundreds of Russian-language publications, as well as the first Catholic Encyclopedia, also in Russian, are evidence of the great concern of the clergy for the development of Catholicism and the Church in those territories.

The Greek-Catholic Church in Ukraine lived in a similar situation to that of the Latin Church and was also forced to operate in secret. The testimonies of the martyrdom of the members of those Churches have great significance. Despite all the pressure and persecution, Catholics never renounced their loyalty to the Holy See.

The volume "The Catholic Church in the territory of the Soviet Union. From the Revolution of 1917 to Perestrojka" tells the difficult history of the Church in those territories. We must remember our history because it is our Mother Teacher. If there were no heroes of the faith at the time of repressions, there would never have been such rapid rebirth of the Church, it would have been condemned to annihilation, and the territories already Christianized in the tenth century would have been destined to become a spiritual desert. Thus modern times confirm the maxim of Tertullian: the blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians.

And yet, from a human point of view, it seemed that with the death of the priest, the Church would have disappeared from the map of the USSR, God wanted to show that he knows how to guide a straight road through the mists of history. Because He, and not someone else, put the last dot on the "i".

I hope that this volume becomes a testimony of faith in times of persecution, of which the modern world is so greatly in need of.

Divine Mercy Sunday -- A Day of Mercy and Love

Divine Mercy Sunday will be celebrated throughout the whole Church on April 8, 2018.

This Feast was instituted by Pope John Paul II in the year 2000, in response to a direct request by the Lord Jesus to a Polish nun, St. Faustina Kowalska, whom Pope John Paul II canonized that year.

Beginning in 1931, Jesus began to appear to St. Faustina in her convent in Krakow and asked her to become his "secretary," and take down what he revealed to her for the good of the Church and the world. He revealed to her the message of his divine, merciful love. She wrote down what the Lord said and it filled in her diary — what turned out to be 689 pages in the English translation. The Lord talked about how he wanted to pour out on the world his mercy, how he wanted people to trust in his mercy and ask for it, and how he wanted them to share his merciful love with others.

Jesus didn't teach us anything new about his merciful love; he just reiterated it. What was new was that the Lord Jesus asked the Church, and that means each one of us, to grow in his Divine Mercy by five practices:

a) The Lord said, "I want... the first Sunday after Easter ... to be the Feast of Mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and a shelter for all souls, and specially for poor sinners. On that day, the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy.

The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day are open all the divine floodgates through which graces flow." The Holy Father, four years ago, said, "It is important that we accept in its entirety the message that comes to us from God's Word on this second Sunday of Easter. From now on, throughout the whole Church, this day will take the name of 'Divine Mercy Sunday.'" But we have to live it, seek confession within eight days of the feast and properly receive Holy Communion.

b) To pray to the image of Divine Mercy — The Lord revealed to St. Faustina an image that he desired to be made: "One night when I was in my cell, I perceived the presence of the Lord Jesus dressed in a white tunic. One hand was raised in blessing, the other rested on his chest. From an opening in the tunic in the chest, two great rays were coming out, one red and the other clear... After some time, Jesus said to me, "Paint an image in accordance with what you see, with the inscription, "Jesus, I trust in you."

A little later, Our Lord explained to her the meaning of the two rays: "The two rays represent the Blood and the Water. The white ray represents the Water [baptism], that justifies souls; the red ray represents the Blood that is the life of souls [the Eucharist]. Both rays flow from the depths of my Mercy when, on the Cross, my Heart in agony was opened by the lance."

c) To pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy — This is something that people can pray on Rosary beads. It is a devotion that is happily becoming more and more popular today.

St. Faustina heard an interior voice that taught her this prayer. On the larger beads of the Rosary, one says, "Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of your dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and for those of the whole world." On the ten smaller beads, we pray, "For the sake of his sorrowful passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world."

You pray five "decades" in this way, after which, one prays three times the "Holy, Holy, Holy" from the Good Friday reproaches, "Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One," "have mercy on us and on the whole world." What we're doing in this beautiful prayer is offering Christ's own sacrifice during the Triduum, to the Father.

We're lifting up the Eucharist — Christ's body, blood, soul and divinity — and making Christ's prayer our own. There is no more powerful prayer!

Jesus promised, "It pleases me to grant everything they ask of Me by saying the chaplet... if it be compatible with my Will." This is especially true at the moment of death. Jesus specifically asked priests — to "recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once [with an attitude of trust, humility and sorrow for sin], he would receive grace from my infinite mercy."

d) To pray particularly at three in the afternoon, the time in which Jesus died on the Cross, invoking the Mercy of the Lord — Jesus said to St. Faustina, "At three in the afternoon, implore my Mercy, especially for sinners, or at least briefly reflect on my Passion, especially on the abandonment I felt at the moment of agony. This is the hour of great Mercy for the whole world. I will allow you to penetrate my mortal sadness. In that hour, I will deny nothing to the soul that asks me in the name of my Passion. Jesus gave three indispensible conditions to hear prayers made at the hour of Mercy: the prayer has to be directed to Jesus, take place at three, and invoke the value and merits of his passion.

e) To make a novena between Good Friday and Divine Mercy Sunday to implore divine mercy. He gave St. Faustina an intention for each day of the novena. He said, "I desire that during these nine days you bring souls to the fount of My mercy, that they may draw from there strength and refreshment and whatever graces they need in the hardships of life and, especially, at the hour of death.

On each day you will bring to my Heart a different group of souls, and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy, and I will bring all these souls into the house of My Father. The groups, for each of the days, are all humanity, specially sinners; priests and religious; the pious and faithful; those who do not believe in Jesus and who don't yet know him; our separated Christian brothers and sisters; the meek and humble and children; those who venerate the mercy of Jesus; those in Purgatory; and the lukewarm.

Let us all say.

JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU."

Corpus Christi 2018

Let The Most Holy Eucharist be the starting point of our meditations.

The Eucharist is the Focal Point, The Truths Of Our Holy Catholic Religion are the Rays.

Let us start from the Focus and Go to the Rays.

It is not difficult to find a relation between the Birth of Jesus Christ in the Stable and His Sacramental Birth on the Altar and in our Souls.

We Must Keep In Mind That The Holy Eucharist Is Jesus Christ, Past, Present, and Future.

The Eucharist is the Last Development of the Incarnation and Mortal Life Of Our Dear Savior.

In the Eucharist, Jesus Christ gives us every grace and all truths commence and end in the Eucharist.

Who does not see that the Hidden Life of Nazareth is continued in the Divine Host of the Tabernacle and that the Passion of the Man- God on Calvary is renewed in the Holy Sacrifice Of The Mass at every moment of the Day and Night all over this Universe.

Is Not Our Lord as Meek and Humble in His Holy Sacrament as during His Mortal Life ??

Is He not always The Good Shepherd, the Divine Consoler, and most importantly Our Best Friend in whom we can confide everything.

The Rosary 2018 -- A Reflection

In our time, in which the Faith in many places seems like a light in danger of being snuffed out forever -- The Highest Priority is to make God visible in the world and to open to Humanity a way to God.

At Fatima, It is amazing to think how 3 Children entrusted themselves to the interior force which had set them on fire in the Apparitions of the Angel and of Our Heavenly Mother.

At Fatima, We are constantly requested to recite the Rosary -- Let us allow ourselves to be attracted by the Mysteries of Christ -- The Mysteries of Mary's Rosary.

The recitation of the Rosary allows us to fix our gaze and our hearts upon Jesus Christ, just like His Mother the supreme model of contemplation of the Son.

Meditating upon the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries as we pray our Hail Mary's Let us reflect upon the interior mystery of Jesus Christ from the Incarnation through the Cross to the glory of the Resurrection.

Let us contemplate the intimate participation of Mother Mary in the mystery of our life in Christ today a life which is also made up of Joy and Sorrow of Darkness and Light Of Fear and Hope.

Let us be True and Authentic Sons and Daughters of Mary.

The Assumption 2018 -- We have someone like us in Paradise

Our Promised Resurrection is hard to grasp and difficult to cling onto. It is Foreign to our personal experience and far outside it.

Who can imagine a truth so vast as the Resurrection of the Dead ??

The Church comes to our aid by giving us a concrete example, a truth on which we can fix our minds.

This is the truth of the Bodily Assumption of the Blessed Mother.

To say that Mother Mary is glorified in Heaven is to assert the power of Christ's Resurrection and to affirm God's promise of our resurrection by giving us a concrete example of it in Mary.

Pope Pius the Twelfth defined the dogma of Mary's Assumption on November 1, 1950. The Pope saw Mother Mary as the First and Greatest of the Saints and not an isolated figure.

In the Assumption of Mary, we are given a picture of the Resurrection for which we hope.

There is something right and fitting in Our Lord Jesus Christ choosing His Own Mother to be the one in whom He would show us the truth of our Resurrection.

She was close to him on earth, as His Mother and shared by Faith and Love in his Mission and in the Mission Of His Apostles.

She was the first to believe and hope in him. She is the first to be fully glorified in Him.

In Mary, assumed to glory we can see the power of the spirit to bring to heavenly glory all those who faithfully hear God's word and respond to it as Mary herself did at the Annunciation and continued to do throughout her life.
